Finished cop animaiton

This is how my animation turned out. I decided to use actual images rather than me drawing it because I thought it might look comical and I like the idea of having Walt disney drawing it and the other Disney characters helping. Also it would be suitable for a wide age range. It's colourful and cartoony for kids and for adults it brings back memories of these characters. Also the way I have done it saved me a lot of time as we didn't have long to do it. They are all guys which gives the male view- especially Gaston. I was very lucky with the two images I found for that I think it works great!
I like how I started drawing a real disney princess this time because I was just drawing it free hand before and it looked rubbish and there was no way it looked like a Disney princess! This works much better.
Unfortunately I made a mistake by using Angelina Jolie as the example for big breast forgetting she had recently had them removed. So that just turned it into a horribly bad joke so I changed that! Overall I like this animation and it shows how they would have come up with a character using social ideals of the perfect woman and dancers and male opinions. I also like the style I used because it looks fun!

Advertising

Sex sells
Deisel uses this in their advertising and underneath they put "unfortunately we sell jeans" which is quite comical.
What is good about advertising?
-it drives global economies
-drives creativity
-it is a very powerful form of art
-art feeds advertising and advertising feeds art.
People have used painting like Salvador Dahlis clocks and turned he clocks into wheels which turn it into advertising a car!
-it shapes popular culture
-it is endlessly entertaining
-it can enlighten or inspire
-it reflects values hopes and dreams
-challenges you to do something
-questions social norms and attitudes
-raises social awareness

1st "wave of creatives" were revolutionaries who were creating utopia
2nd "wave" created persuasive communication to fulfil peoples dreams.

Context of practice lecture 12

Synthesis

-Praxis- reflection, theory, action
A lot of this lecture was recapping things and saying how we can bring it all together.
-Learning outcome 1 - knowledge and understanding demonstrating a deep awareness of the subject- PEST- political, economical, social and technological.
Learning outcome 2- cognitive skills demonstrating an awareness of the relationship between theory and practice.
Learning outcome 3- Practical and professional skills to analyse and evaluate ideas from different sources.
Learning outcome 4- Key transferable skills research that demonstrates awareness of critical, effective and testable process.
Learning outcome 5- synthesis- a complex dynamic process where al the pieces come together to an even bigger part of the puzzle

We need to use some of what we have learnt in these lectures in our essays.

Marx's theses on Feuerbach said ' Philosophers have only interbred the world in various ways; the point is to change it' I think as artists we can change the worlds perception of things.

I'm not sure I really understand this but this is Kolb's experimental learning cycle basically seeing if your experiments work and if not why not and trying again. Its about not doing things mindlessly.

Context of practice lecture 9

Communication in mass media

This is to reach a large audience.
Religious images communicate messages to many, even if you cant read it like this image Giotto di Bondone, Betrayal. The good/ holy people like Jesus and his disciples have halos around their heads and the pitchforks and fire make it obvious something bad is going on.

Just a bit of type can change a lovely image into an advertisement( John Everett Millais, Bubbles, 1886, Pears Soap advertisement) this was where graphic design began.

Savile Lumley, Daddy, what did YOU do in the Great War?, c. 1915, poster shows a rich man sat with his children because he didn't go to war because he was scared maybe. This advertisement basically encourages men to go to war so that when their kids ask this question they have something to tell them.

Alot of posters and styles were mentioned and the different styles and how they spread through the world like the classic 'we want you' poster translated from the german army to the american army.

-Graphic Design is a relatively young discipline
-Links between Graphic Design and different disciplines, e.g. Fine Art,Advertising are arguably becoming increasingly blurred
-Although born out of consumerist/capitalist interests, Graphic Design is arguably becoming increasingly concerned with social issues

Context of practice lecture 11

Post modernism

A reaction to the modernism rule was that there should be no rules.
Kitsch- purposefully tacky.
Complexity
chaos
bricolage
parody/irony
'double coding- double meaning
Alessi kettle - They created a kettle but redesigned it just because they could and made it look different.
and Juicy salif was the same. It's completely needlessly designed and turns out this actually rusted if you used it too much so it was useless.
These were functional pieces of art that cost a fortune.

I really don't get this one. Michael Craig Martin stated that he turned a glass of water into an oak tree...I don't see an oak tree but he insists that it is. I think this is about art as the artist perceives or means it to be?
The spiral Jetty is quite cool however it got encrusted with salt and no-one can find it especially when the tide is in. But it challenges convention.

Context of practice lecture 10

Modernity and modernism

Modernity- quality of being modern
Modernism- early to mid 20th century art movement.
How the western world became 'modern' pre modernity- world governed by
-church
-monarchy+aristocracy
-patriarchy- men dominate
-Jean Honore Fragonard 1732-1806 swing
-Industrial revolution=key influence 1750-1789
-Thomas Telfords iron bridge 1789
-Fully takes hold 1830's-40's
-Development of factories
-Transport info structure
-Emergence of working class
-Move from country to town.
Age of enlightenment- modern
philosophy research and science, writers, thinkers-voltaire-candide. Denis diderot- first encyclopedia
New interest and experiments reflect in artists work.
Anatomy lecture of Dr Nicholas Tulp Rembrant.

1751-71-Publication of encyclopaedia
1776-Declaration of independence
1789- French revolution
1804-Napoleon crowned emperor
1814-Bourbon restoration
1830-July revolution (France)

Liberty leading the people painting for male pleasure showing the pverthrow of France.
Oscar Rejlander - The two ways of life (1817-1875) on one side this shows the upperclass and the other shows the lower class. Notice how you don't see the harlots faces. It is showing indulgence and that if your hard-working you go to heaven. This was done using the same people throughout using multiple exposures and changing position. I thought that was quite clever.

30 Years later there were faster exposure times and you could see breaking waves.
This image -Mellet- The gleaners- shows social concious and the inequalities in life. They are picking up scraps from the harvest, the bits that the other people left behind.

A point was made that the class distinction means that reach people go out to be seen so they dress nice etc but I don't remember the photo for this.

In December 1910 human character changed. cubism occurred showing speed and movement.
If you pronounce the letters in French they sound like a French phrase meaning - she's got a hot arse. I thought that was quite funny.

In more modern times tattoos are acceptable in our culture but they will die out. They are there to look pretty (ornamentation).

More modern buildings were being made with a sense of clean. Everything was smooth concrete, glass, reinforced steel and everything was painted in simple colours like white. 'War is the worlds only hygiene'
The Bauhaus school was taken over by Nazis for offices.
The Barcelona chair design becomes minimalist on posters.

Context of practice lecture 8

The photographs as document

William Edward Gibbon the great chartist meeting at the common 1848 plate camera background of crowd. The photographer was pretty much invisible here taking in the moment. There is no point of view, no focus on anything specific.
How the other half live- Jacob Riis 1890- Bandits Roost. In this image the photographer is completely visible we can see this because the subjects are looking directly at him. This image feels quite aggressive.

A growler gang in session 1887. This image looks fake. That's because it is, it was staged. This is the reason I don't like this photo. It lacks emotion and realism and there's no movement. It's boring.
This image 'Duffer Boy' looks a child labour. This boy is obviously very young and doing quite a dangerous job. I think it would have been quite dangerous taking this photo mostly because the boy might get distracted and chop his hand off or something!
Margaret Bourke- White share croppers home 1937. This is an ironic photo as this is showing the poverty of this little boys home, how they have to wallpaper their house with magazines and newspapers but this means advertising wealth all over their walls.
Dorothea Lang 'Migrant mother' 1936. This shows the mother as a religious figure rising above poverty and scandal. Although they live in obvious poverty she is doing the best she can for her children.

There were many more photos shown but I liked these ones. Photography achieves its highest distinction-reflecting the unfairity of the human condition in a never to be retrieved fraction of a second.
Photography also breaks down the language barrier. You don't need to talk to them to see what's going on here even though they may not speak English. As they say- An image speaks a thousand words.

Context of practice seminar 5

In this seminar we looked more into our essays and go given a list of essay titles to choose from.
We got told what we need to include and what not to do. I think the important part were to write it all in third person never saying 'I think', the Harvard reference system (that I need to research), use quotations, make points, provide the evidence and explain them.

Context of practice seminar 4

Animation in the commercial realm

You can input your own style into commercial work but you have to consider money and audience.
using animation in advertising makes it  more memorable and it appeals to a broader audience.
We looked at Matches- an appeal by Arthur Melbourn. It is the oldest animated advert done frame by frame. And it was English! It was a man built out of matches drawing on a blackboard. It was really cool and people were wowed by it!
Animation is impressive. If you're impressed, you might be more inclined to buy the product.
Then we looked at Rabbit and Hare- John lewis. I thought it was beautifully done but I don't think the music was right for it although it was just as lovely and I do like the song on its own.
I like how the style was like a cross between Brother bear, and Watership down.
Next we looked at Ant and Decs Christmas animated advert with the gingerbread man. This one was more obviously designed for Morrison because it had more humour in it and there was lots of examples of food everywhere not to mention the M of the apron.
I feel that the John Lewis advert is more like art in it's own right then they stuck the John Lewis logo at the end.
These adverts separate the  classes as in where you can afford to shop. John lewis is higher  budget and its different and more memorable.

After this we looked at animal crossing. We noticed it was aimed at a young audience, employs life lessons such as working to earn money, introduces values such as social skills and working and cleaning, mortgages and consumerism. It also shows that it's hard to achieve a level of luxury and you have to work for it.

Context of practice seminar 3

Autership and the Avant- Garde

Auter= Auther, A film maker with their own style that is easily recognisable as being them like Andy Warhol. They are artist in their own rights- novelists.

This was developed in response to Hollywood cinema and the criticism that American films are anonymous products of the studio system and the culture industry- they are predictable.
Truffaut- 'A certain tendency in French cinema' (1954) Attacks French tradition in which director is seen as simply adding images to a pre existing literary scenario.
Animation on one hand echos and imitates large scale film production processes.
On the other hand it offers possibilities for a film maker to operate almost entirely alone. Therefore it's probably the most auterist of film practices. Even at a most collaborative level it requires cohesive intervention or an autherical presence. I agree with this because everyone has their own drawing style or animation style like Disney and Loony Tunes etc. Whereas it is more difficult for a filmography to put a mark on their work like Spielberg does.
However few animators are actually championed as auters in relation to feature length animations because they are subsumed within the corporate identity such as Disney.
The idea of avante garde implies that progress is always the regret of rebellion against an entranchy.

From writing up my notes for this seminar I realised I should really work on my fast writing because I can't read half of it.

Context of practice seminar 2

Genre

Genre is the categorizing of a film in an easily recognisable way- Horror, comedy, musical etc.

We looked at these animations-
-Tales of the unexpected
-Grizzly tales -Peels butterfly
-Bugs bunny
-Tom and jerry- milk
- Dr jack+mr hyde
-Barry purve, Achilles

We discussed whether or not animation could be considered scary and if it had the same capacity to be scary as film does. Like in the grizzly tales for gruesome kids stories, they are pretty scary I remember them as a kid but because it's an animation you kind of know it's not real however if this was done in film it would have seemed more real and would have been more scary and maybe have given children nightmares. Therefore I believe that animation does have the capacity to be scary just not in quite the same level as film.

Some generic plots of different genres are:
-Maturation (coming of age)
-Redemption (transition bad to good)
-Punitive (good character behaves bad+punished)
-Testing (will power vs temptation)
-Education (negative to positive perception)
-Disillusionment (reverse of education)

Context of practice seminar 1

This seminar was just briefing us on our 3000 word essay and what these words mean:
Academic malpractice: Serious offences such as cheating, collusion, falsification, ghosting, personation+plagiarism, unfair advantage.
Plagiarism- presenting someone else's work as your own (need to reference correctly)
Cheating- Copying in an exam
Collusion- Work submitted that's been done with someone else but wasn't supposed to be.
Ghosting- Getting someone to pretend they're you
We also got given a task to do a short essay comparing and contrasting Jiri Trnka- The hand and Zagrebs Film- Surogat cersatz.

Story boards and animatic

This is my idea for the COP animation. It is only in stick people right now because I'm not sure about the style yet but this is the story.

I turned this into an animatic and I really like the idea, though I need to decide where to put the text because in some places you can't read it and I think it might need to stay in the same place every time so people can read it faster and not have to look where it will be next. Also although this is rough I need to draw the princess more princess like even from the start because it will be hard for her to turn into a beautiful princess from this.

Research

This is an excerpt from my own essay for COP showing my research on the subject I am going to put in my animation about the disney princesses and their bodies.

"Disney’s artists were merely taking these descriptions and using ‘contemporary popular images of feminine beauty and youth’ to create a character that would be seen as beautiful as per her description. (Beu E. Haas L. Sells L, 1995, page 108)

As for how femininity is portrayed in movement and posture, ‘Disney’s early teenaged heroines were constructed on the bodies of professional dancers’ (Beu E. Haas L. Sells L, 1995, page 110) which would account for the slim athletic figure and great posture and elegance."

I plan to show these things by using an image of a celebrity to model the princess on and also a dancer.
