Communication in mass media
This is to reach a large audience.
Religious images communicate messages to many, even if you cant read it like this image Giotto di Bondone, Betrayal. The good/ holy people like Jesus and his disciples have halos around their heads and the pitchforks and fire make it obvious something bad is going on.
Just a bit of type can change a lovely image into an advertisement( John Everett Millais,
Bubbles, 1886, Pears Soap advertisement) this was where graphic design began.
Savile Lumley, Daddy,
what did YOU do in the Great War?, c. 1915, poster shows a rich man sat with his children because he didn't go to war because he was scared maybe. This advertisement basically encourages men to go to war so that when their kids ask this question they have something to tell them.
Alot of posters and styles were mentioned and the different styles and how they spread through the world like the classic 'we want you' poster translated from the german army to the american army.
-Graphic Design is a relatively young
discipline
-Links between Graphic Design and different
disciplines, e.g. Fine Art,Advertising are arguably becoming increasingly
blurred
-Although born out of consumerist/capitalist
interests, Graphic Design is arguably becoming increasingly concerned with
social issues
