Autership and the Avant- Garde
Auter= Auther, A film maker with their own style that is easily recognisable as being them like Andy Warhol. They are artist in their own rights- novelists.
This was developed in response to Hollywood cinema and the criticism that American films are anonymous products of the studio system and the culture industry- they are predictable.
Truffaut- 'A certain tendency in French cinema' (1954) Attacks French tradition in which director is seen as simply adding images to a pre existing literary scenario.
Animation on one hand echos and imitates large scale film production processes.
On the other hand it offers possibilities for a film maker to operate almost entirely alone. Therefore it's probably the most auterist of film practices. Even at a most collaborative level it requires cohesive intervention or an autherical presence. I agree with this because everyone has their own drawing style or animation style like Disney and Loony Tunes etc. Whereas it is more difficult for a filmography to put a mark on their work like Spielberg does.
However few animators are actually championed as auters in relation to feature length animations because they are subsumed within the corporate identity such as Disney.
The idea of avante garde implies that progress is always the regret of rebellion against an entranchy.
From writing up my notes for this seminar I realised I should really work on my fast writing because I can't read half of it.
